    Evaluation of the present theoretical basis for determination of planetary surface properties by earth-based radar

    Spaceflight programs such as the planned Viking landing on Mars require the determination of planetary surface slopes and surface dielectric constants by earth-based methods. Heavy reliance is often placed on radar backscattering data for estimation of these surface properties. An assessment is presented of the basic theory by which the raw radar data are interpreted, and it is shown that serious difficulties and internal inconsistencies are present in the available theoretical formulas. The discussion brings into question the reliability of the presently available results for these surface properties as obtained by earth-based radar methods

    With the ever-increasing pressure on electric motor manufacturers to develop smaller and more efficient electric motors, there is a need for more thermal analysis in parallel with the traditional electromagnetic design. Attention to the thermal design can be rewarded by major improvements in the overall performance. Technical papers published to date highlight a number of thermal design issues that are difficult to analyze. This paper reviews some of these issues and gives advice on how to deal with them when developing algorithms for inclusion in design software

    Radar multipath study for rain-on-radome experiments at the Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility

    An analytical study to determine the feasibility of a rain-on-radome experiment at the Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility (ALDF) at the Langley Research Center is described. The experiment would measure the effects of heavy rain on the transmission of X-band weather radar signals, looking in particular for sources of anomalous attenuation. Feasibility is determined with regard to multipath signals arising from the major structural components of the ALDF. A computer program simulates the transmit and receive antennas, direct-path and multipath signals, and expected attenuation by rain. In the simulation, antenna height, signal polarization, and rainfall rate are variable parameters. The study shows that the rain-on-radome experiment is feasible with regard to multipath signals. The total received signal, taking into account multipath effects, could be measured by commercially available equipment. The study also shows that horizontally polarized signals would produce better experimental results than vertically polarized signals

    Professional Interaction in Mental Health Courts: Processing Defendants with Mental Illness

    In this paper, the author presents ethnographic research and analysis of how criminal justice and mental health professionals interact with each other and with criminal defendants with mental illness in running a mental health court (MHC) program. Ethnographic field research included observations of court programs, interviews of professionals, and gathering of textual documents, at nine MHCs in a Midwestern state. In MHC criminal defendants with mental illness participate in a program of regular court appearances, probation supervision, and mandated treatment, rather than being incarcerated in jail or prison. The author utilized the symbolic interaction perspective and examined how the professionals work together to select participants and judge their performances. Professionals interact and share case documents in socially constructing the participant. They operate the program as a filter so that a relatively small number of the population of incarcerated persons with severe mental illness in the state successfully graduate from the program. Implications of these findings are discussed

    A simple procedure is described for determining the excitation coefficients of an array feed which compensates for the surface distortion of a reflector antenna to improve the radiation pattern in such a way as to approximate the performance of the undistorted antenna.     Thermal analysis of induction and synchronous reluctance motors

    In this paper, the thermal behavior of two induction motors (2.2 and 4 kW, four poles) and two synchronous reluctance motors [(SynRMs) transverse-laminated] are investigated and compared. Both motor types use the same stator but have different rotors. Using a lumped-parameter simulation program, a thermal analysis has been also carried out, and the obtained results have been compared with the experimental ones. A direct comparison of the thermal behavior of the two motor types has thus been made for constant load and constant average copper temperature conditions. Inasmuch as the SynRM has negligible rotor losses compared with the induction motor, it is capable of a larger rated torque, from 10% to more than 20%, depending on the relative size of end connections and motor lengt

    In this paper, the authors present an extended survey on the evolution and the modern approaches in the thermal analysis of electrical machines. The improvements and the new techniques proposed in the last decade are analyzed in depth and compared in order to highlight the qualities and defects of each. In particular, thermal analysis based on lumped-parameter thermal network, finite-element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics are considered in this paper. In addition, an overview of the problems linked to the thermal parameter determination and computation is proposed and discussed. Taking into account the aims of this paper, a detailed list of books and papers is reported in the references to help researchers interested in these topics

    A parametric analysis of DIAL sensitivity with heterodyne detection is presented and comparisons with direct detection are discussed. Examples are given for monitoring vertical distributions of O3, H2O, and NH3 using a ground-, aircraft-, or shuttle-based pulsed tunable CO2 laser DIAL system. Results indicate that maximum sensitivity at minimum laser energy per measurement requires multiple pulse operation with the energy per pulse selected so that the measured photon rate is approximately equal to the detector IF bandwidth. Measurement sensitivities can be maximized and interference effects minimized by fine adjustment of measurement frequencies using the tunability of high pressure lasers. The use of rare isotope lasers minimizes loss due to CO2 atmospheric absorption

    Atmospheric trace constituent measurements with higher vertical resolution than attainable with passive radiometers are discussed. Infrared differential absorption lidar (DIAL), which depends on Mie scattering from aerosols, has special advantages for tropospheric and lower stratospheric applications and has great potential importance for measurements from shuttle and aircraft. Differential absorption lidar data reduction involves comparing large amplitude signals which have small differences. The accuracy of the trace constituent concentration inferred from DIAL measurements depends strongly on the errors in determining the amplitude of the signals. Thus, the commonly used SNR expression (signal divided by noise in the absence of signal) is not adequate to describe DIAL measurement accuracy and must be replaced by an expression which includes the random coherent (speckle) noise within the signal. A comprehensive DIAL computer algorithm is modified to include heterodyne detection and speckle noise. Examples for monitoring vertical distributions of O3, H2O, and NH3 using a ground-, aircraft-, or shuttle-based pulsed tunable CO2 laser DIAL system are given

    Propulsion Study for Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT)

    Propulsion requirements were determined for 0.5 and 0.7 Mach aircraft. Sensitivity studies were conducted on both these aircraft to determine parametrically the influence of propulsion characteristics on aircraft size and direct operating cost (DOC). Candidate technology elements and design features were identified and parametric studies conducted to select the STAT advanced engine cycle. Trade off studies were conducted to determine those advanced technologies and design features that would offer a reduction in DOC for operation of the STAT engines. These features were incorporated in the two STAT engines. A benefit assessment was conducted comparing the STAT engines to current technology engines of the same power and to 1985 derivatives of the current technology engines. Research and development programs were recommended as part of an overall technology development plan to ensure that full commercial development of the STAT engines could be initiated in 1988
